We’ve reached the end of the month yet again (can you believe it?), so it’s time for me to share my May favorites! This month it was all about simplicity and the joy in the little things – from the tiniest accessories to the most basic beauty essentials to the most subtle yet alluring scents.

Okay, so for the past month I’ve noticed that my lips have been suuuuper dry for some reason. Maybe it’s the change in weather, but they’ve never felt this dry in my entire life! I mean, I could wear a fishbowl full of water around my head and my mouth would still feel like the Sahara Desert. It’s not so much that they were chapped, but they had a dry, tight feeling to ’em. So weird. But this has pretty much been my best friend this entire month; it’s the EOS lip balm in Pomegranate Raspberry. It’s smooth, applies well, lasts long, smells great and tastes great, too! No SPF in this one, but the Lemon Drop flavor does have SPF, so I’m trying that next. :)
Introducing my second best friend this month: Lush’s Mint Julips lip scrub. I’ve used this about 2-3 times a week and it has been a godsend! Whenever my lips were feeling extra dry or a little flaky, I rubbed some of this on. It has sugar for exfoliation and natural peppermint oil for moisture. Plus, it tastes soooo good! It’s the perfect combination of minty freshness and sweet vanilla.
Now that I’m on summer break, I’ve finally gotten around to picking up this beautiful book again. It’s The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, which I bought over two years ago. I started reading it back then, got about a third of the way, and stopped. Sometime last year, I tried to continue where I left off but with this kind of unique story and the time traveling that takes place, it’s hard to keep up with if you don’t read it consistently. I’ve started over again from the beginning; I’m about 50 pages in and I’m hooked!
My next favorite is something I wanted for a really long time and I finally got a pair this past Christmas. These are Ray Ban aviators and although they’re pretty standard, I love them so much! I had a phase a year or two ago where sunglasses were my everyday staple accessory (I even wore them indoors), and while I was content rocking my H&M shades or Cole Haan frames, I’ve always wanted a pair of Ray Bans. I love how sleep and classic these are, and they go with everything! For the summer, I want to get a pair of oversized and/or polarized aviators but for now, these are the apple of my eye! ;)
From my head, now to my feet! These are a pair animal print loafers I got at Target sometime late last year. They are by Mossimo but I’ve been asked and told that they are similar to a pair by Steve Madden. Pretty cool, considering they were only about $20! I love that these are a nice accent to a basic outfit, they can be dressed up or dressed down and I love how easy they are to just slip on and go. I affectionally call these my “pimp shoes” lol! We all need a pair or two of those, right?
Another thing I’ve been loving this May are what many call knuckle rings or “middy” rings. They’re rings that you wear along your finger, but not all the way down like you normally would. They add a nice little edge to your accessories and they make your fingers look longer (which is good for someone like me!). I got all these rings from my last job at my school’s bookstore when I was still working there.
As for nail polish, I have two favorites. The first is one that I often reached for and especially loved to wear during the daytime. It’s Essie’s “Turquoise and Caicos” which I’ve mentioned several times on this blog and featured in my favorite spring nail polishes this year. It’s a gorgeous color, works well on different skin tones – you can’t go wrong!
For the nighttime, I often wore China Glaze’s “VII”. It’s a deep eggplant with a hint of berry and it is also creme finish. I wear this so much in the colder months that I’m already down to almost half the bottle (although you can’t tell by the photo). It’s not very popular compared to China Glaze’s other colors but definitely check this out when you get the chance.
Okay, so I have a love/hate relationship with Taylor Swift. Other than the catchy tunes I belt out in my car from time to time, I don’t really pay much attention to the girl. However, when her first fragrance “Wonderstruck” launched back in 2011, I was curious to try it out. What would a Taylor Swift perfume smell like? A countryside picnic? Kittens? The regret of all the men who have dated her? Actually, it smells great. It’s a very cozy scent that reminds me of fruit and flowers, but not in a bad way. Plus how gorgeous is the bottle?! If anything, this girl knows how to wrap a pretty package and lure ’em in. Maybe that’s how she… okay, I’ll stop.
Last but not least is my favorite candle from Bath & Body Works. And I don’t mean like YouTube beauty guru kinda “favorite” – I mean my absolute favorite EVER. It’s called Caribbean Salsa and it is heaven! It’s described as “luscious pineapple nectar and fresh peach with Yuzu flower and vanilla” aka the best smell your nose will ever experience. I think I like this one a lot because it’s fruity but not artificial smelling or too sweet, plus it coincidentally has Yuzu, a key ingredient to my favorite Lush bubble bar called “Yuzu and Cocoa”. I have multiple candles of this scent because I love it and they were on sale for just 2/$20 and then again for just $7.99 (normally $19.99 each!). I burned one last night and o..m..g.. I couldn’t have topped May off in a better way.
What have you been loving this May? Anything I should try? Let me know in the comments! :)
